Claim: Why did Jews need armed guards before Israel existed?
CONTEXTTHE ANSWER
Hashomer, founded April 1909, guarded Jewish farms against theft and raids, since the Ottoman authorities gave little protection. After the April 1920 Nebi Musa riots it gave way to the Haganah.
