FACT CHECK · FROM FAISAL TO HAMAS: THE RELIGIOUS REFUSAL OF A JEWISH NATIONAL HOME, 1920-TODAY

Claim: On our stage: 'Islamists hijacked it from Faisal's time'

MISLEADING

THE ANSWER

Partly. From 1921 a cleric's office led (the Mufti); al-Qassam armed cells in the 1930s. But 1919-20 was nationalist, Muslim and Christian; the PLO was secular 1964-87. Hamas's bid came in 1987.

Hamas's own 1988 charter, Art. 27: the PLO 'adopted the idea of the secular state'. Oxford encyclopedia: before Hamas, Islam was rarely its main ground.
